3 Ways To Cope With Hearing Loss

As you get older, you might notice a few changes occurring. One common ailment that occurs as a person gets older is hearing loss, and about 1/3rd of Americans age 65 to 75 has some sort of hearing loss. Loss of hearing can make even the simplest things that should be relaxing, like watching TV, a frustrating endeavor. Luckily, there are a number of ways that you can cope with your hearing loss in order to make it a less frustrating experience.

Adaptive Behavior

You will have to adjust your behavior to fit the dominant mold of those around you: friends, families, loved ones and strangers alike – most of them are able to adequately hear. This means changing your behavior, rather than expecting for those around you to adjust themselves to fit yourself. This means getting used to behavior that was originally not in your purview, perhaps.

Changing yourself or your situations to adjust for your hearing loss is often referred to as adaptive behavior. Sitting closer to individuals in order to hear them better is one of the easiest hints in the book when it comes to adaptive behavior. Ensure that you are listening to the person and explain  to them your hearing loss issues if need be.

Change Conditions Of Communication

If you wish to engage in communication or conversation, make sure that the environment is right for such an interaction. If the environment is not right for the conversation, you should either adjust the conditions of the environment or change the venue of the conversation.

For example, if you are attempting to hold a conversation with someone and something like the volume of music or the television is making it difficult, explain the situation to the person and ask if you can turn down the volume of the offending apparatus to a reasonable volume. If this is an impossibility, like if you are in a public venue where turning down the volume is an impossibility, consider going somewhere else where you can have a conversation.

Consider Hearing Aid Technology

Although many people who begin to experience hearing loss are initially hesitant to the notion of using a hearing aid, many people become more open to this idea as they realize it will make conversation easier for both parties. Many modern hearing devices, from many different hearing aid brands, are largely unnoticeable and can be quite comfortable, in fact. For those of you who wish to pursue such an option, it is recommended that you visit a trusted audiologist, or a hearing aid practitioner in order to find out more about the phenomenon and discover if this is a solution that is ultimately right for you.

Losing your hearing doesn't have to destroy your quality of life. Keep these tips in mind to cope with your hearing loss to make an unpleasant experience a bit easier to deal with.
