Why Hand Veins Are Dangerous As You Age And Why You Should Have Surgery On Them

When you are young, veins that pop out of your hands, wrists and fingers are not a big problem. However, as you age, there is greater potential for emergency medical situations and surgery because of the veins, your skin condition and accidents. Here is why varicose hand veins are dangerous as you age and why you should have the surgery to treat them while you are still young.

Changing Skin and Fat Conditions in Your Aging Hands

To begin with, the skin over your hands is typically thin. Up until your forties or fifties, there is still a little bit of fat padding surrounding your wrists, palms and fingers. As you get older, this bit of padding dissipates and your skin gets drier and drier, becoming papery thin in your seventies, eighties and nineties. The tiniest cut becomes a skin tear when any abrasive or shearing movement runs over your elderly hands. If varicose hand veins are exposed, they are at serious risk of rupturing and causing blood loss. When the veins are especially engorged and swollen, skin ulcers can develop quickly and may take a very long time to heal.

Treating the Varicose Veins in Your Hands While You Are Young

There are several different surgical options which can treat your varicose hand veins, or any veins that are too close to the surface of your skin. By collapsing, cauterizing or removing these bulging veins now (while you are still middle-age or younger), you may be able to avoid serious medical emergencies later in life. You can ask your doctor about these following procedures for the most troublesome of veins in your hands:

  • Sclerotherapy:Liquid chemical closes off/shuts down vein completely.
  • Laser Surgery: Laser causes veins to shrink and fade away.
  • Phlebectomy: Removes the veins surgically and the ends of the veins are sewn shut.

Additionally, treating your veins now reduces the chance that these veins could be cut accidentally and create an emergency situation before you reach your retirement years.

Why Diet and Exercise Are Not Good Treatment Options for Hand Veins

Veins of this nature cannot be treated with diet and exercise or even weight loss, which are treatments frequently used for varicose leg veins. There simply is not enough excess fat to be lost from your hands that would allow these veins to sink back down behind the muscles and tendons in your hands and fingers. While losing weight is an excellent treatment for leg and trunk veins, it does not work well for hand veins.
